The 6 Days Marangu Route is one of the most popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Often referred to as the "Coca-Cola Route ," it is the only route offering comfortable mountain hut accommodation instead of camping, making it an excellent choice for trekkers seeking extra comfort during their adventure.
Your adventure begins with a morning transfer from Arusha or Moshi to Marangu Gate, where you'll complete registration with Kilimanjaro National Park authorities. After meeting your mountain crew and receiving a briefing, your trek officially begins. The trail leads through a beautiful tropical rainforest filled with towering trees, colorful birds, and playful blue monkeys. The path is well-maintained but can become muddy, especially during the rainy season, making trekking poles and gaiters highly recommended. After approximately 4–5 hours of hiking, you'll arrive at Mandara Hut, where you'll enjoy dinner and your first overnight stay on the mountain.
After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and continue through rolling heath and moorland. As you gain altitude, the vegetation changes dramatically, revealing giant lobelias, groundsels, and wide-open views of Kilimanjaro. On clear days, you'll enjoy spectacular views of both Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak before arriving at Horombo Hut in the afternoon. Take time to relax, enjoy the scenery, and prepare for the next stage of your climb.
Today is dedicated to acclimatization, one of the most important factors for a successful summit. You may spend the day relaxing at Horombo Hut or join your guide on a short acclimatization hike toward Mawenzi Ridge before returning to the hut for lunch. This hike helps your body adapt to the higher altitude while allowing you to enjoy magnificent mountain views. After dinner, you'll spend a second night at Horombo Hut.
Today's trek crosses the wide alpine desert known as The Saddle, which stretches between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape becomes rocky, dry, and dramatic as vegetation gradually disappears. Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, you'll have an early dinner and rest before your midnight wake-up call for the summit attempt. Proper hydration and rest are essential as you prepare for the most challenging and rewarding day of the expedition.
Your summit attempt begins shortly after midnight. Using headlamps, you'll steadily climb toward Gilman's Point (5,685m) before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable moment, with breathtaking views over glaciers and the vast plains below. After celebrating your achievement and taking photos, you'll descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved overnight stay.
After breakfast, you'll begin your final descent through the moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. At the park headquarters, you'll receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate, celebrating your incredible achievement.
